my name is nicHi.
i spell my name this way because to embrace my difference.
i am a performer.
i am a writer.
i am an artist.
i am an activist.
i have a BFA in Drama from NYU/Tisch School of the Arts.
i teach there now, in the Playwrights Horizons Theater School studio. i am the Head of the Movement Department.
i deeply value the opportunity i have been given to hold educational space with my students at Tisch. i am so thankful for the education i have received in my life, and pour every ounce of that gratitude into my teaching responsibilities.
i make experimental theater.
some “traditional” titles that describe what i do include director, choreographer and playwright; but i like to think of myself as a Maker. and i am grateful to Ars Nova for creating space in this industry for artists like me.
i have been dancing for over 20 years.
i have been choreographing for about that long, too.
i have a Masters in Creative Writing from The New School.
i make Black theater.
this means that my target audience is Black folkx.
all are welcome; Black folkx are prioritized.
i am particularly proud to celebrate Black womxn & femmes in everything that i make.
i believe in children.
if i could do anything else in this life, i think i’d be a full-time preschool teacher.
i started a small business called BK Play! in 2016. BK Play! is currently a roaming art collective that encourages imaginative play for children ages 2-10. one day, i hope to open a brick and mortar storefront in my neighborhood of Crown Heights.
it can't hurt to articulate again: i am an artist.
as such, i believe it is my responsibility to project hope into the world through everything that i make.
i hope my art contributes to the legacy of artists that have come before me:
Lucille Clifton
Gwendolyn Brooks
Maya Angelou
Toni Morrison
Alvin Ailey
Adrienne Kennedy
Katherine Dunham
Ntozake Shange
Nikki Giovanni
Suzan Lori Parks
bell hooks
Faith Ringgold
Tracy Chapman
and Claudia Rankine.
